Vasa Museum

Ideal: Very good for history, maritime heritage, and strong museum experiences.

The ship set out on its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628 and got only 1,300 metres from the harbor: the king wanted two gun decks, so the hull was too narrow and top-heavy, and it heeled and sank in the first strong wind. Raised 333 years later in 1961, nearly 98% is original — the Baltic's low salinity means shipworm cannot live here to eat the wood. Polyethylene glycol was sprayed for seventeen years to prevent drying and cracking. Sweden's most visited museum.

Did you know?

Why did the Vasa sink?

On her maiden voyage in 1628 she capsized in the first gust, about 1,300 m from the quay. The upper decks were too heavy for the narrow hull — a miscalculation that shows the limits of the era's naval knowledge.

How did the ship survive so well?

The Baltic's low salinity does not support the shipworm that destroys timber. The hull therefore lay almost intact on the seabed for 333 years until it was raised in 1961.

Why is the museum kept so cool?

Temperature and humidity are tightly controlled because the polyethylene glycol preserving the wood degrades in damp. The ship is still slowly sagging, and its support system is regularly renewed.

Why go?

  • To see one of the world's best-preserved historic warships
  • To learn Swedish maritime history through an impressive museum experience
  • Because it is a distinctive stop beyond classic Stockholm museum visits
