The island was once a royal hunting ground and remains officially crown property; since 1995 it has been part of the world's first National City Park. Thanks to that protection, oak forest and deer are visible just minutes from central Stockholm. Vasa, Skansen, the ABBA Museum, and Gröna Lund amusement park all line up on the same island. Reach it by historic tram line 7 or a ferry from the center.

How did the island stay so green?
Djurgården has been a royal hunting ground since the 16th century, and that status limited building. It is now part of the Royal National City Park, recognised as the world's first national urban park.
How do you get to the island?
By ferry from the centre, on the historic number 7 tram, or on foot. The tram line was reopened in the 1990s on a volunteer initiative and still runs vintage cars.
How many museums are on the island?
More than ten, including the Vasa, Skansen, ABBA, Nordiska and Junibacken, devoted to Astrid Lindgren's world. A large share of Stockholm's museums sit on this one island.
