Van Gogh Museum

Ideal: Ideal for art lovers, museum-goers, Van Gogh fans, and Amsterdam culture routes.

Home to the world's largest Van Gogh collection — about 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and more than 700 letters. The core of the collection belonged to the artist's brother Theo; when Theo died six months later, the works passed to his wife Jo van Gogh-Bonger, who organized exhibitions and published the letters and was the person who truly introduced Van Gogh to the world. The painter sold almost nothing during his lifetime yet produced nearly 2,100 works in his final decade. Works are arranged chronologically, so you can follow his palette step by step from dark tones to yellow.

Did you know?

How many paintings did Van Gogh sell in his lifetime?

Documented sales are very few — the popular account speaks of a single painting. He produced around 2,100 works, almost all supported financially by his brother Theo, and it is that family legacy that forms the museum's core collection.

Why do the Sunflowers look faded?

Some of the yellow pigments Van Gogh used change chemically under light and turn brown. The paintings are therefore duller than he saw them, which is why the museum controls light levels so strictly.

How did the collection stay together?

After Theo's death it passed to his widow, Jo van Gogh-Bonger. Rather than selling it off she exhibited the works and built Van Gogh's reputation — the museum exists largely because of her decisions.
