Why are the Tatras such a small range?
At roughly 25 km long they form one of the world's smallest alpine ranges. Even so they contain the highest point in the Carpathians, Gerlachovský štít at 2,655 m.
What happened in the mountains in 2004?
A hurricane-force windstorm flattened more than 12,000 hectares of forest in a few hours. Part of the area was deliberately left untouched so natural regeneration could be studied.
What wildlife lives in the mountains?
Brown bears, chamois, marmots and eagles. The Tatra chamois is a subspecies found only in these mountains, numbering a few thousand.
