It sits on a rocky promontory where the Danube and Morava meet, controlling both waterways. Excavations have found Celtic, Roman and Great Moravian layers on the site.

Who destroyed the castle?

Napoleon's troops blew it up in 1809. It has been preserved as a ruin ever since and was never rebuilt.
