How large is Spiš Castle?
At around 4 hectares it is one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe. Begun in the 12th century, it reached its size through courtyards added over the centuries.
Why was the castle abandoned?
A fire in 1780 caused heavy damage, and its owners moved to more comfortable manors rather than repair it. It has been preserved as a ruin ever since.
Which films used the castle?
Its dramatic silhouette has featured in several historical productions, best known among them Dragonheart and The Last Legion. It was UNESCO-listed in 1993.
