Why is the castle nicknamed the "upturned table"?

Its square block with a tower at each corner looks from a distance like a table with its legs in the air — a nickname widely used in Bratislava.

How did the castle become a ruin?

A fire in 1811, most likely caused by negligence, gutted it and it stood ruined for over 140 years. What you see today results from reconstruction begun in the 1950s.

Were Hungarian kings crowned here?

The coronations took place not in the castle but in St Martin's Cathedral below. With the Ottoman advance, Bratislava was Hungary's capital from 1563 to 1830, and 11 kings were crowned here.
