What is the statue coming out of the manhole?

A bronze figure called Čumil shows a worker peering out of a manhole. Installed in 1997, it has been hit by vehicles several times, so a warning sign was put up beside it.

What makes Michael's Gate special?

It is the only survivor of the city's four medieval gates, dating from the 14th century. Set into the pavement beneath it is a compass rose showing distances to world capitals.

Why is Bratislava so close to two other countries?

The Austrian and Hungarian borders are less than 20 km from the centre. It is the only capital bordering two other countries, and Vienna is a short train ride away.
