Did you know?

Why was this town so important?

It held one of Europe's richest silver mines and was among the largest settlements in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 18th century. The world's first mining academy was founded here in 1762.

Are the lakes around the town natural?

No. Around 60 artificial reservoirs called tajchy were built in the 18th century to power the mines. They now serve as swimming and recreation lakes.

Why is the town inside a volcano?

Banská Štiavnica lies within the collapsed caldera of a huge ancient volcano — and that volcanic geology is exactly why its silver and gold veins were so rich.
