Thousand Islands
Ideal: Ideal for nature, boat tours, photography, relaxed routes, couples, and countryside day trips.
The name says a thousand, but there are 1,864 islands — a piece of land counts only if it stays above water year-round and holds at least two living trees. Boldt Castle on one island was being built by hotelier George Boldt for his wife; when she died suddenly in 1904, Boldt wired to halt all construction and never set foot on the island again — the structure stood unfinished for seventy-three years. The region is also credited as the birthplace of Thousand Island dressing.
