Colonel John By, builder of the Rideau Canal, founded the market in 1826 — one of Canada's oldest continuously operating public markets. The area's best-known treat is BeaverTails: fried dough stretched into a beaver-tail shape and served with cinnamon and sugar. When Obama stopped for one on his 2009 Ottawa visit, the queue outside the shop barely cleared for days. By day it's produce and craft stalls; by evening bars and restaurants take over.
