Ibiza Old Town (Dalt Vila)

The walls around Dalt Vila were rebuilt in the 16th century to withstand cannon fire to plans by Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi and joined the UNESCO list in 1999 as one of the best-preserved examples of military architecture from that period. Settlement is much older: Phoenicians arrived in 654 BC and more than three thousand tomb chambers were found in the necropolis at Puig des Molins. Steep streets climb to the cathedral and castle on the hill, with the harbour spread out below.

Why is Ibiza's old town UNESCO-listed?
Dalt Vila was inscribed in 1999. The reason is not only its walls: together with the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta and the Puig des Molins necropolis it preserves an unbroken record of early Mediterranean cultures.
When and why were the walls built?
The present walls were built in the 16th century by Italian engineers against Ottoman fleets and corsair raids. They are considered one of the best-preserved examples of Renaissance military architecture in the Mediterranean.
What was the island known for before the nightlife?
In the 1960s Ibiza was a hub of Europe's hippie communities, and today's weekly craft markets are a direct legacy of that era. The club scene only reached global scale in the late 1980s.
