Its name comes from Arabic al-kal'at al-hamra, meaning 'red fortress'; most of today's palaces were built under the Nasrid dynasty in the 13th–14th centuries and surrendered by Boabdil in 1492. It stood half-ruined and forgotten for five centuries until Washington Irving's book, written while he lived for months in one of its rooms in 1829, rekindled European interest. The twelve marble lions supporting the fountain in the Court of Lions and the muqarnas vaulting are considered the peak of Nasrid craftsmanship. Daily ticket numbers are limited.

What do the inscriptions on the Alhambra's walls say?
The surfaces carry tens of thousands of Arabic inscriptions. The most repeated is the Nasrid dynasty's motto, "There is no victor but God." Much of what looks like ornament is in fact readable text.
How does the water system work?
Water is brought kilometres from the River Darro along the Acequia Real and moves by gravity alone. The pools, fountains and Generalife gardens are fed without pumps, purely through calculated gradients.
What makes the fountain in the Court of the Lions special?
The twelve marble lions supporting it are older than the palace, dating from the 11th century, and probably came from a Jewish vizier's residence. In the original arrangement they are said to have spouted in turn to mark the hours.
