Malbork Castle

At roughly 21 hectares it is the world's largest castle by floor area. The Teutonic Knights began building in 1274 and moved the order's state capital here in 1309; an estimated 30 million bricks were used because there was no building stone in the region. The heating system was unusual for its time: hot air from stones heated in ground-floor furnaces rose through holes in the floor above. The structure suffered heavy damage in 1945, restoration took decades, and it joined the UNESCO list in 1997.
