Arctic Cathedral

Ideal: Ideal for modern architecture, northern routes, and Tromsø visits.

Despite the name it is actually a parish church; it opened in 1965 to Jan Inge Hovig's design. Eleven aluminium-clad concrete panels flank each side, and the form directly evokes ice masses. Victor Sparre's 140-square-metre stained-glass mosaic covering the east wall was added in 1972 and is among the largest in Europe. Late concerts under the midnight sun in summer and during aurora season in winter are the church's best-known events.

Did you know?

What does the church's shape evoke?

Built in 1965 from 11 aluminium-clad concrete triangles, it was designed to suggest ice formations, the northern lights and the traditional Sami tent at once.

Why is the stained-glass window so large?

The east window covers 140 m², among the largest in Europe. Added in 1972, it is the only source of colour in the otherwise plain white interior.

Why was Tromsø called the Paris of the North?

Enriched by Arctic hunting in the 19th century, its residents dressed and lived with a sophistication visitors did not expect this far north — and their surprise produced the nickname.

Why go?

  • To see Tromsø's most iconic architectural landmark
  • To feel Arctic Norway atmosphere within the city
  • To experience modern architecture and light effects

Travel tip

In winter months it makes more sense to plan it alongside a northern lights tour on a Tromsø route.
