Akershus Fortress
Ideal: Good for history, fortress architecture, and city views.
Built around 1290 by King Haakon V, it withstood many sieges over the centuries; no foreign army ever took it by force — its surrender to the Germans in 1940 without a shot fired is a separate wound in Norwegian history. The fortress also served as a prison for a long time, and wartime collaborator Vidkun Quisling was executed here in 1945. The Resistance Museum inside tells the story of the occupation years through underground press and sabotage actions.

It withstood many sieges from the Middle Ages on and was never taken by force. It changed hands only in 1940, when it was handed over to German forces on Norway's capitulation.
Who is buried at the fortress?
The royal mausoleum holds Kings Haakon VII and Olav V of Norway with their queens. The site is still used for official state occasions.
Do you have to pay to enter the fortress grounds?
The outer grounds and ramparts are free; only the castle museum and interiors are ticketed. It is one of the best free viewpoints over the fjord in central Oslo.
