At roughly 57,000 square metres it is one of the world's largest city squares, standing directly over Tenochtitlan's ceremonial centre — the cathedral was built with stone from dismantled Aztec temples. Because the city sits on drained lake bed, it keeps sinking; the cathedral has settled metres deep and at an angle, stabilised only by major engineering works. Templo Mayor beside it was found by accident in 1978 when electrical workers digging a cable trench hit a huge stone relief.
