Copper Canyon
Ideal: Ideal for nature, train travel, trekking, scenery, and adventure routes.
It is not one canyon but a system of six canyons covering several times the area of the Grand Canyon — and in places even deeper. The El Chepe railway running through it spans 653 kilometres with 37 bridges and 86 tunnels, taking roughly ninety years from concept to its 1961 opening. The Rarámuri people who live here are known for long-distance running: cutting thin sandals from old tyres and covering dozens of kilometres — a story the world learned through the book Born to Run.
Why go?
- To watch canyon scenery from the El Chepe train
- To explore trekking and hiking routes
- To learn about Tarahumara local culture
Travel tip
Book El Chepe tickets in advance; allow at least two or three days; dress in layers for altitude and cold nights.
