Cancún & Riviera Maya

Ideal: Ideal for beaches, diving, cenotes, water sports, and tropical holidays.

Cancún did not grow by chance: in 1970 the Mexican government used computer analysis to find the country's best coast for tourism, and the model pointed here — when only a few hundred people lived on the island. Today's hotel zone sits on a 22-kilometre sand spit. Yucatán has no surface rivers; all freshwater flows beneath limestone, and collapsed cave roofs form the natural sinkholes called cenotes — the region's diving culture grew from this geology.
