Chichen Itza

Ideal: Ideal for archaeology, history, Maya culture, and Mexico's classic itinerary.

The four faces of El Castillo pyramid have 91 steps each; with the platform on top they add up to exactly 365 — the structure is essentially a stone calendar. Twice a year at equinox, afternoon sun casts a shadow along the north staircase that looks like a serpent slithering downward. Clap in front of the stairs and the echo returns a sharp sound like the sacred quetzal bird. The 168-metre ball court is the largest in Mesoamerica, and whispers at one end can be heard at the other.
