Ruin Bars

The first example, Szimpla Kert, opened in 2002 in an abandoned courtyard building in District VII. This former Jewish quarter had been neglected for decades after the war and subsequent expropriations; as buildings awaited demolition, cheap rents drew venues here. The cluttered aesthetic was not a design choice but the result of having no money: bathtubs from scrapyards, old Trabant bodies, and mismatched furniture were used as they came. Today the district is defined by this culture, and residents' noise complaints are a regular debate.

How did ruin bars start?
In the early 2000s abandoned buildings awaiting demolition in the old Jewish quarter were turned into temporary venues. Szimpla Kert was the first, furnished with second-hand pieces dragged into empty courtyards.
Why is the furniture such a jumble?
Nothing was designed: old bathtubs, sewing machines, a Trabant car and whatever else turned up became seating. Over time that disorder became the defining trait of the genre.
Are ruin bars only open at night?
No. Places like Szimpla Kert host a farmers' market on Sunday mornings and work as cafés and exhibition spaces during the week — daytime is the best way to see them without the crowds.
