Fisherman's Bastion

Ideal: Ideal for photography, viewpoints, and romantic city atmosphere.

Despite its name it was never a defensive structure: Frigyes Schulek designed it directly as a viewing terrace between 1895 and 1902. The seven turreted towers represent the seven Hungarian tribes that settled in the basin in 895. The name survives because in the Middle Ages the fishermen's guild was assigned to defend this section of the wall. Through the white arches you see the Danube, Parliament, and Pest in a single frame; the lower terraces are free, the upper lookout is ticketed in season.

Did you know?

Was the Bastion ever a real fortification?

No. Completed in 1902 purely as a viewing terrace, it never had a military role. The name comes from the fishermen's guild said to have defended this stretch of wall in the Middle Ages.

What do the seven towers represent?

They stand for the seven Magyar tribes that settled the Carpathian Basin in 895 — a deliberate national reference rather than a coincidence.

Do you have to pay to go up?

The lower terraces and surroundings are free; only part of the upper towers is ticketed in season. Early morning gives you the view for free and without crowds.

Why go?

  • For the finest angles on Parliament and the Danube
  • To experience fairytale architecture in the Buda Castle area
  • To visit one of Budapest's most photogenic spots

Travel tip
