The village in Rovaniemi opened in 1985 directly on the Arctic Circle, marked with a painted line on the ground. Everything actually began with a single cabin hurriedly built for Eleanor Roosevelt's visit in 1950. The post office on site receives letters to Santa from nearly 200 countries, and the total since opening has passed 20 million. You can send a card from here with a special Arctic stamp immediately or hold it until December.

The village's Santa Claus Post Office receives hundreds of thousands of letters a year from over 200 countries. Cards posted there go out with a special Arctic Circle postmark.
When can you see the northern lights here?
Around Rovaniemi they are visible on clear, dark nights from September to March, with activity on roughly 150 nights a year. Getting away from town lights markedly improves the odds.
