Market Square (Kauppatori)

Ideal: Suitable for local market, short breaks, and seaside atmosphere.

The harbour market has been held in the same spot since the 1810s; stalls sell salmon soup, small muikku fish fried in butter, and regional strawberries in summer. The 1908 Havis Amanda fountain at the edge of the square is capped with a white student cap by graduating students every 1 May, and the ceremony is one of the city's busiest days. Suomenlinna ferries depart from here; the Presidential Palace and City Hall also face the square.

Why go?

  • To experience Helsinki harbour atmosphere
  • To see local flavours and market culture
  • To stop before catching the Suomenlinna ferry

Travel tip

Keep it short in cold weather; as an open area it can feel very chilly on windy days.
