The park opened in 1968 right next to the LEGO factory and was the world's first Legoland. The company name comes from the Danish 'leg godt', meaning 'play well'; they started in 1932 with wooden toys. Today's interlocking plastic brick was patented in 1958 and the design was guarded so tightly that a piece made that year still clicks into a set you buy today. About 20 million pieces were used in the city and country models in Miniland.
