Kronborg Castle

Ideal: Ideal for history, castle architecture, and a coastal getaway.

Shakespeare never came here but set Hamlet at Elsinore; English acting companies performed at the castle in the 1580s and they most likely carried the story. The building's real function was not literary but financial: from 1429 to 1857 every ship passing the four-kilometre strait paid a toll to Denmark, and the castle's cannons were security for collection — for a time much of royal revenue came from here.

Did you know?

Is Hamlet really set here?

Shakespeare's "Elsinore" is this castle. He is thought never to have seen it — Danish actors travelling to England probably described it. Hamlet is staged in the castle courtyard each summer.

Why was the castle so rich?

Kronborg controlled the narrowest point of the Øresund, the gateway to the Baltic. The toll levied on every passing ship was for centuries the Danish crown's largest source of income.

Who is the statue in the cellar?

The sleeping warrior Holger Danske, who according to legend will wake to defend Denmark in its hour of need. The Second World War resistance movement took its name from him.

Why go?

  • To see the legendary castle that inspired Shakespeare's Hamlet
  • For sea views and strait atmosphere
  • To add a strong escape to a Copenhagen day trip
