Rozafa Castle
Ideal: Fortress history, panoramic landscapes and Balkan oral traditions
Rozafa Castle stands on a rocky hill southwest of Shkodër overlooking the plains around the Buna and Drin rivers. Its strategic position supported defensive use across Illyrian, Roman, Venetian and Ottoman periods, leaving walls and structures from several eras. Views extend toward the river valleys and Lake Shkodër. The legend of Rozafa is an important part of local oral culture, but it should be understood as tradition rather than documentary history.
Why go?
- Views across the Buna and Drin waterways
- Fortifications from several historical periods
- Local culture associated with the Rozafa legend
Travel tip
