Butrint Archaeological Site

Ideal: Archaeology, Classical and Byzantine history, and cultural-landscape enthusiasts

Butrint lies south of Saranda between Lake Butrint and the Vivari Channel. Its archaeological layers span a Greek colony, Roman city, early Christian bishopric and later Byzantine and Venetian occupation. The theatre, baptistery, basilica and fortifications reveal different periods along one walking route. UNESCO recognises the exceptional relationship between the ruins and their natural setting, making it important to remain on marked paths and avoid touching mosaics or fragile structures.
