Berat Castle

Berat Castle occupies a hill above the Osum River and remains a living historic neighbourhood within its walls. The site has ancient origins and contains Byzantine churches, Ottoman-period religious buildings, stone lanes and the Onufri Museum. Together with the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, it helps explain the multicultural urban character recognised by UNESCO. The steep stone approach rewards a slower visit through the internal lanes rather than a brief stop at the viewpoint.
