Where does the name Koza Han come from?
"Koza" means silkworm cocoon. Built in 1491, the han was the centre of the cocoon trade and the heart of Bursa's role on the Silk Road. The cocoon market tradition still continues in summer.
What is the small structure in the middle of the courtyard?
The octagonal building is a small mosque with an ablution fountain beneath it. The arrangement is common in Ottoman hans, letting merchants pray without leaving the trading floor.
Is the han still a working market?
Yes. Its 95 rooms are still filled with shops selling silk, scarves and textiles, with cafés on the ground floor. It is one of the rare commercial buildings serving the same function for over five centuries.
