Pamukkale Travertenleri

Pamukkale Travertenleri is one of the notable stops in Pamukkale, with a route-friendly location for your trip.

Did you know?

How do the white terraces form?

Hot water rich in calcium bicarbonate rises from underground and, on contact with air, releases carbon dioxide so calcium carbonate precipitates. The build-up is measured in millimetres per year — today's terraces are the accumulation of tens of thousands of years.

Why must you walk barefoot on the terraces?

Shoe soles scratch and soil the soft calcium surface. In the 1990s hotels and the asphalt road on the site were removed and water flow began to be rotated between pools; today the marked route may only be walked barefoot.

What is the ancient city above the terraces?

Hierapolis, founded in the 2nd century BC, sits on top of them. These thermal waters are why it became known as a healing centre, and in the pool known as Cleopatra's Pool you can swim among column fragments toppled by earthquakes.
