Kapadokya

Kapadokya is one of the notable stops in Cappadocia, with a route-friendly location for your trip.

Did you know?

How did the fairy chimneys form?

Eruptions of Erciyes and Hasan Dağı millions of years ago blanketed the region in soft tuff, and harder basalt fragments landed on top acting as caps. Rain and wind eroded the soft rock around them, leaving the columns beneath those caps standing.

How deep are the underground cities?

Derinkuyu descends eight levels to about 85 m and is estimated to have sheltered tens of thousands. Ventilation shafts, wells, stables, wineries and multi-tonne round stone doors closed from the inside were all part of the system.

Why do balloon flights take off so early?

In the hours just before sunrise the wind is weakest and the air most stable, which is the only condition in which flying low inside the valleys is safe. Flights are cancelled often because of weather, so it is wise to keep your schedule flexible.
