Did you know?

Why isn't the palace a single building?

Unlike European palaces, Topkapı was laid out not as one large structure but as a series of pavilions around four courtyards. The plan is often read as a nomadic Turkic tent camp translated into stone, with access narrowing from courtyard to courtyard.

How many people lived in the Harem?

The Harem was a separate settlement of more than 300 rooms housing not only women but eunuchs, servants and princes. The sultan's mother, the valide sultan, stood at the top of its hierarchy and could be decisive in affairs of state.

How large were the palace kitchens?

They fed thousands daily and employed over 1,000 cooks. That section now displays one of the world's most significant collections of Chinese porcelain — evidence of the Ottoman position on the Silk Road trade.
