Kordon

Kordon is one of the notable stops in Izmir, with a route-friendly location for your trip.

Did you know?

Why are there no tall buildings along the Kordon?

Building on the waterfront was deliberately limited and a broad lawn left as a buffer between the sea and the city. It is one of the clearest urban decisions preserving İzmir's relationship with the water.

What happened to the horse-drawn carriages?

The horse carriages that symbolised the Kordon were withdrawn on animal-welfare grounds and replaced by electric vehicles. The decision was long debated in İzmir and took effect in 2020.

Why is the sunset here special?

The Gulf of İzmir opens west, so the sun sets directly over the water — one of the few points among Turkey's large western cities with that alignment. The evening walk along the shore is a daily ritual.
