Why does Kemeraltı curve?
Its main street follows the shoreline of the inner harbour that existed here until the 17th century. After the harbour silted up, the arc along the old coast became the bazaar's spine — the curve you walk today traces that vanished shore.
How many hans are in the bazaar?
Kemeraltı is not a street but a district containing dozens of hans, mosques, synagogues and churches. The Kızlarağası Han of 1744 is the best-known, restored and returned to trade.
Why are the synagogues clustered together?
Several historic synagogues stand very close together around Havra Sokağı. İzmir was a major destination for Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492, and the concentration dates from that period.
