Why is the clock tower in Konak Square?

It was raised in 1901 for the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II's accession. Similar clock towers went up in many cities of the empire at the time, bringing modern timekeeping into public space.

Who donated the clock?

The clock itself was a gift from the German Emperor Wilhelm II. The tower's architecture combines Ottoman and North African Maghrebi styles, designed by the Levantine architect Raymond Charles Père.

How have earthquakes affected the tower?
