Why is the village UNESCO-listed?
Cumalıkızık was inscribed in 2014 together with Bursa under the title "Birth of the Ottoman Empire". What is protected is not individual houses but a 700-year-old Ottoman rural settlement surviving whole, street pattern included.
Why do the houses widen on the upper floors?
The overhanging upper storeys enlarged the interior and sheltered the narrow lanes from rain. Ground floors are stone while upper floors use timber frames with mudbrick infill — a flexible system that works in an earthquake zone.
What is there to eat in the village?
Village breakfast and gözleme cooked over a wood fire are the local staples. In spring the raspberries and mulberries grown here are sold both fresh and as preserves.
