Did you know?
Why is the fountain inside the mosque?
It is one of the rare mosques with an open-topped ablution fountain in its centre. Tradition says the owner of that plot refused to sell, so the building was raised around it and the fountain stayed indoors.
Why is the calligraphy here so significant?
The mosque holds 192 calligraphic panels and wall inscriptions by 41 different calligraphers. That concentration makes it an open museum of Ottoman calligraphy, with some pieces written directly onto columns and walls.
What do the mosque's twenty domes mean?
Tradition says Bayezid I vowed to build twenty mosques after his victory at Nicopolis and fulfilled it with twenty domes on one building. They rest on twelve great piers and spread light evenly through the interior.
