Kale duvarlarında neden antik heykel parçaları var?

Duvarlar farklı dönemlerde onarılırken çevredeki Roma yapılarından sökülen sütun, sunak ve yazıt parçaları doğrudan örgüye katıldı. Bu yüzden bugün duvarlarda Latince yazıtlar ve mermer bloklar açıkça görülebiliyor.

Bugünkü surların çekirdeği Bizans dönemine, 7. yüzyıla dayanıyor; ancak tepedeki yerleşim Frig dönemine kadar iniyor. Kale Galat, Roma, Bizans, Selçuklu ve Osmanlı dönemlerinde sürekli kullanıldı.

Kale içinde hâlâ insanlar yaşıyor mu?

Evet. Surların içindeki mahallede geleneksel Ankara evleri korunuyor ve bir bölümü hâlâ konut olarak kullanılıyor. Restore edilen evlerin bir kısmı kafe, atölye ve butik otel olarak işletiliyor.

Why are ancient sculpture fragments built into the castle walls?

As the walls were repaired in different periods, columns, altars and inscriptions stripped from nearby Roman buildings were built straight into the masonry. Latin inscriptions and marble blocks are still plainly visible in them.

How old is the castle?

The core of the present walls is Byzantine, from the 7th century, though settlement on the hill goes back to the Phrygian period. The castle stayed in continuous use through Galatian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman times.

Do people still live inside the castle?

Yes. The neighbourhood within the walls preserves traditional Ankara houses, some still used as homes. A number of restored houses now operate as cafés, workshops and boutique hotels.
