A barrier island 55 kilometers long but only a few hundred meters wide in places. Sea Turtle Inc. on the island protects nesting grounds for Kemp's ridley, the world's most endangered sea turtle, and hatchling releases are open to the public in season. Just south at Boca Chica sits SpaceX's Starbase facility; on launch and test days rockets can be watched from the island with the naked eye.
