San Antonio River Walk

This pedestrian route grew from disaster: after about fifty people died in the 1921 flood, the city planned to bury the river bend in concrete as a storm channel. Architect Robert Hugman proposed a landscaped commercial walkway instead, and after years of rejection it was built from 1939 to 1941 through public employment programs. The path sits one level below the street so traffic noise fades; today it stretches 24 kilometers from downtown to the museum district.
