Houston Museum District

Ideal: Ideal for museums, culture, family trips, art, science, and indoor itineraries.

Nineteen museums cluster within a two-and-a-half-kilometer radius, eleven of them free. The district's most unusual space is not quite a museum: Rothko Chapel, a non-denominational octagonal room of silence with fourteen Mark Rothko canvases fading toward black on the walls. The artist specified every detail from light to wall color but died before the 1971 opening. The Menil Collection is also free in its Renzo Piano building.

Why go?

  • To visit multiple Houston museums in one area
  • For a strong indoor route on rainy or hot days
  • To combine art, science, and history in one plan

Travel tip

Choose your museums in advance — seeing them all in one day can be exhausting.
