Did you know?

Why does Piran look like an Italian town?

It belonged to the Venetian Republic for some 500 years and its architecture is entirely Venetian. It remains officially bilingual today, in Slovene and Italian.

Why is the middle of the square empty?

Tartini Square was the inner harbour until 1894. It was filled in because of water pollution, and a differently coloured strip of paving traces the line of the old quay.

How long is Slovenia's coastline?

Just 46.6 km, one of the shortest in Europe. Piran is the best-preserved historic town on that short stretch.
