Niš Fortress

Ideal: Visitors interested in Ottoman history, archaeology and relaxed city walks

Niš Fortress occupies a broad site beside the Nišava River and reflects several layers of the city's history. Much of the surviving walls and gates took shape during the Ottoman period in the 18th century, while remains from earlier eras also survive inside. Paths, archaeological features and cultural venues make it an accessible history route close to the city centre. Events can temporarily change how parts of the grounds are used, so current local information is useful when planning a visit.

Why go?

  • 18th-century walls and Istanbul Gate
  • Archaeological remains within the grounds
  • Central riverside location
