Red Rock Canyon
Ideal: Ideal for nature, hiking, photography, road trips, and a quick escape from the city.
Only half an hour from the Strip, a 21-kilometer one-way scenic drive makes the area easy to explore by car. The rocks' red tone comes from iron oxide in sandstone dunes fossilized roughly 180 million years ago; cross-bedded layers are frozen sand waves. The Keystone Thrust fault matters to geologists: older gray limestone sits thrust over younger red sandstone, and the reversed order is visible to the eye. Timed entry reservations may be required in busy periods.
