Las Vegas Strip

Surprisingly, the Strip is not inside Las Vegas city limits: casinos registered in 1950 as a separate district called Paradise to avoid city tax and have technically sat outside the city ever since. On the 6.8-kilometer stretch distances deceive; two hotels that look close on a map can be a half-hour walk apart. The beam from the Luxor pyramid is among the world's brightest, and the insect density it draws has created a small ecosystem of bats and owls feeding around it.
