Pétrusse Valley
Ideal: Ideal for nature walks, city views, and a calm route.
The valley running about 70 meters below the city is the main reason Luxembourg could not be taken for centuries: the town is built on a rock mass between two deep ravines. The 1903 Adolphe Bridge crossing the valley, with its 84-meter single stone arch, was one of the world's largest stone-arch bridges when completed and is today the country's unofficial symbol. Below is a landscaped park; walking the paths lets you see the city not from above but from the foot of the walls.

Why is there a gorge in the middle of the city?
The Pétrusse and Alzette rivers cut deep into the rock, splitting the city into two levels. That natural chasm was the foundation of Luxembourg's defences for centuries.
How do you get down into the valley?
By footpaths, stairs, or the free Pfaffenthal lift opened in 2016. It drops 71 m to the lower town, its glass cabin looking out over the valley.
Is public transport free in Luxembourg?
Yes. In 2020 it became the first country in the world to make all buses, trains and trams free nationwide.

Travel tip
