Grand Ducal Palace

Ideal: Suitable for city history, royal buildings, and short cultural stops.

The building was originally constructed as the town hall between 1572 and 1574; it only became the Grand Duke's official city residence in 1890. The stone carving on the Flemish Renaissance façade is unexpectedly detailed for such a narrow street. Two guards continuously pace at the gate. During the occupation years the Nazis used the palace as a concert hall and beer hall, and part of the interior was damaged in that period. Interior visits open only in midsummer, when the Grand Duke is away from the city.

Did you know?

Can you go inside the palace?

Only on guided tours for a few weeks in summer. Tickets are sold through the tourist office and the proceeds go to charity.

What was the building originally?

Built as the city hall in the 16th century, it only became the grand duke's official residence in the 19th. The Flemish Renaissance ornament on the façade dates from the town hall.

When does the changing of the guard take place?

The guard changes hourly, in a far more modest ceremony than in Britain. The single sentry at the door is one of the symbolic duties of Luxembourg's small army.

Why go?

  • To see one of Luxembourg's state and monarchy symbols
  • To add a historic stop to an old-town walking route
  • To experience the palace's elegant architecture and official atmosphere
