The building is the only major structure left from the 1893 World's Fair. The collection's standout is a submarine: German U-505, captured intact in the Atlantic in 1944, was the first enemy warship the U.S. Navy had taken whole since 1815. Because it held an Enigma machine and codebooks, the capture stayed secret until the war ended and the crew was listed as missing. The submarine now sits in a dedicated hall beneath the museum and can be entered.
