Navy Pier
Ideal: Ideal for families, lake views, fun, walks, and relaxed city outings.
It opened in 1916 as a dual-purpose pier for cargo ships and the public. In World War II it became a naval training base where about 15,000 pilots earned carrier landing certification — including a young George H. W. Bush. From 1946 to 1965 it served as the University of Illinois Chicago campus. Today's 60-meter Ferris wheel nods to the first Ferris wheel invented in Chicago in 1893.
